Air Hub: Engineering healthy indoor environments aims to build research capacity to understand what is in particulate matter (PM2.5) inside, what its health impacts are, and what we should do about it. Although we know that PM2. 5 is a significant contributor to ill health, we know little about the constituents (and therefore toxicology) of particulate matter in our buildings. The network will run for two years with a series of online and in-person workshops, sandpits and pilot studies.
We are are excited to announce that applications are now open for our Air Hub Sandpit!
This two-day, in-person event will bring together a diverse group of participants to collaborate on innovative research ideas to better understand particulate matter in indoor environments. Attendees will develop proposals for feasibility studies, with a total of £150,000 available to fund approximately three successful projects.
We strongly encourage applications from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. This is a highly competitive opportunity to shape impactful, interdisciplinary research.

Online Workshop: What do we know about the constituents of particulate matter in indoor environments? - 6th May 2026
Join our 2.5 hour workshop which will bring together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore what particulate matter (PM) indoors is, how it differs from outside, and identify future research directions in this rapidly evolving field. We will hear from academics exploring particles indoors from both a chemical and biological perspective. Talks will be interspersed with breakout groups for discussions. These discussions will also serve as an early forum for generating ideas that could be developed into funding proposals for Air Hub’s upcoming summer sandpit event. Registration now open, please see our events page for more details.
Online Webinar: INGENIOUS: What We've Learnt About Particulate Matter Indoors - 19th May 2026
Join our 1 hour webinar led by INGENIOUS co-lead, Jacqui Hamilton who will discuss what the project has learnt so far regarding indoor particulate matter. Jacqui leads WP 2b that is focused on making measurements of the air quality within 300 homes in Bradford. She is responsible for understanding the chemical composition of different types of particle sources and to help identify which sources lead to poor indoor air quality. Registration now open, please see our events page for more details.
