Online Workshop - What do we know about the particle composition in indoor environments?
6th May 2026, 9:30-12:00 (BST)
It is now well known that particulate matter is responsible for significant impacts on all organs of our body. However, this relationship has been largely drawn against outdoor measurements. Indoor air is responsible for a large part of our exposure, and many studies demonstrate high levels of particulate matter indoors but what do we currently understand about particles found indoors?
When we measure particulate matter indoors what are we measuring? Are the constituents of these particles the same as outside? What proportion is biological? Are the particles ingressing from outside, or are they generated indoors? How does this vary between schools, homes, workplaces, health centres etc?
This 2 and a half hour interactive workshop put on by the EPSRC funded Air Hub network will bring together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore what particulate matter (PM) indoors is, how it differs from outside, and identify future research directions in this rapidly evolving field.
We will hear from academics exploring particles indoors from both a chemical and biological perspective. Talks will be interspersed with breakout groups for discussions. These discussions will also serve as an early forum for generating ideas that could be developed into funding proposals for Air Hub’s upcoming summer sandpit event.

Online Webinar - INGENIOUS Project: What We've Learnt About Particulate Matter Indoors
19th May 2026, 1-2pm (BST)
INGENIOUS: Understanding the sources, transformations and fates of indoor air pollutants.
The INGENIOUS project is a £2.9 million grant funded by UKRI, running from 2021-2025. It focuses on homes in the city of Bradford, which, like many other parts of the UK, is affected by poor air quality. Bradford has a multi-ethnic population and high levels of deprivation, with some of the highest childhood illness rates in the UK.
INGENIOUS co-lead, Jacqui Hamilton is leading this webinar to discuss what the project has learnt so far regarding indoor particulate matter. Jacqui leads WP 2b that is focused on making measurements of the air quality within 300 homes in Bradford. She is responsible for understanding the chemical composition of different types of particle sources and to help identify which sources lead to poor indoor air quality.
